How to prepare for process automation and AI

Start with clear outcomes, not technology: pick 1–2 measurable business goals (e.g. cycle time, customer satisfaction, cost). Focus first on high-volume internal processes that impact your KPIs. Don’t rush into a solution that may not meet your business needs.
Map the process end-to-end: document how work actually flows today, including handoffs, decision points, exceptions, and rework. A visual process map exposes variability that automation would otherwise codify.
Standardize before you automate: work with process teams to remove unnecessary variation and one-off practices. Standardization reduces complexity, lowers implementation risk, and accelerates ROI.
Assess data and systems readiness: good inputs lead to good outputs. Assess data quality, availability, and integration points across systems. Identify where manual data entry, delayed updates, or inconsistent formats create bottlenecks.
Design for exceptions and humans-in-the-loop: automation should handle repetitive or predictable work, but all processes have exceptions. Define clear escalation paths, decision rules, and the human owners responsible for judgment and edge cases.
